This is a beautiful late 1950s or very early 1960s Norwegian cardigan by Gunn Reiss, entirely handmade in Norway from 100% wool. Knitted in a warm natural oatmeal shade, it features an intricate traditional-inspired pattern in muted red, moss green, mustard and brown, worked across the yoke and repeated in smaller motifs throughout the body and sleeves.
We particularly love the high knitted collar and the wonderful decorative metal buttons running all the way down the front — small details that give an already very special knit so much character.
The cardigan retains both of its original labels, including the fascinating FORUM – The Permanent Sales Exhibition of Norwegian Arts and Crafts, Oslo label. FORUM was associated with the presentation and sale of Norwegian applied arts and craftsmanship in Oslo during this period, making the surviving second label a particularly lovely part of the garment's history.
Beautifully made, wonderfully warm, and a very charming example of mid-century Norwegian knitwear.
