This is a gorgeous 1950s cashmere jumper by Barrie, Scotland. The colour is particularly lovely, a deep wine burgundy with plum-purple undertones, changing subtly depending on the light.
It has that unmistakably feminine 1950s silhouette we love: a neat crew neckline, short fitted sleeves and a softly shaped body finishing in a wide ribbed waistband that sits beautifully at the waist. Simple at first glance, but incredibly elegant when worn.
Barrie has been producing fine knitwear in Hawick since 1903, part of the long tradition that made the Scottish Borders internationally renowned for exceptional cashmere. This example was made for W. S. Robertson of Hawick, whose name appears alongside Barrie on the original label. Barrie remains an important name in Scottish luxury knitwear today — a lovely piece of history behind such an understated sweater.

Condition: Mint condition. There were 3 pinholes on the front but they have been perfectly repaired and you will not even notice them. This piece has been carefully hand washed and the cashmere fibers are in excellent shape, fluffy, soft and free of pilling. The color is solid. No holes, stains, smells, rips, etc.
