This is a gorgeous late 1940s Viyella shirtwaister dress, made in the brand’s signature lightweight wool and cotton cloth.
A wonderful example of practical yet beautifully tailored post-war daywear, featuring a rich tartan in deep navy, forest green, red and cream. The dress has a classic pointed collar, fitted waist and four distinctive flap pockets — two at the chest and two at the hips — together with contrasting red buttons and three-quarter sleeves finished with buttoned cuffs.
The lightweight Viyella fabric has a lovely soft handle and combines warmth with a surprisingly light feel, making it particularly well suited to this style of everyday dress.
Viyella has a remarkable place in British textile history. Developed in England at the end of the 19th century, its famous wool-and-cotton cloth became internationally known for garments designed to be warm, comfortable and durable without the weight of traditional wool flannel.
