This is a stunning late 1940s French wool dress by Sous le Signe de Paris, made from a wonderfully substantial natural-toned wool with a softly textured weave.
A particularly elegant example of late 1940s daywear, with a beautifully shaped silhouette: a fitted natural waist, softly gathered bodice beneath the front and back yokes, long sleeves and a narrow skirt finished with a back vent.
The neckline is especially lovely, with a softly rounded collar and a short front placket fastened by two contrasting deep burgundy buttons with a subtle embossed design. Two inset hip pockets follow the line of the waist and add a beautifully understated tailored detail.
The dress fastens at the side with its original metal zipper.
The Sous le Signe de Paris label belongs to a French ready-to-wear name found on surviving mid-century dresses and in period fashion advertising. This example, with its restrained tailoring, substantial wool and distinctly late-1940s silhouette, is a particularly beautiful piece of post-war French daywear.
